John Roberts asked for time off work to be with his wife when she gave (bear) to their first child. His boss said no, but Mr Roberts did not accept this (refuse). He took time off anyway and was then told not to bother to come back to work. He thought he had been (fair) dismissed and took his case to an (industry) tribunal. The court agreed with him and awarded him £6,000 damages, which his boss must now pay him in (compensate). His boss, Martin Smith said, "It's a totally (reason) decision. When my wife had a baby, I was too busy to have time off. Mr Roberts still has to go to work, (regard) of what is happening in his private life. I can't run my company according to when the wives of my (employ) are having babies."
